One summer night, I was walking in Seoul.
Living in the big city meant walking a lot more than I was used to.
So of course, I started feeling hungry.
Like, stomach inside-out kinda hungry.
I needed to find something to eat, and quickly.
But, my Korean was terrible.
I didn't feel confident.
It was so bad, I felt like I couldn't even order food.
I stepped into a local spot, hoping they’d have a digital menu so that I could order without needing to speak Korean.
I was so nervous that I had my phone ready in hand with Google Translate open.
"Hello, how can I help you?" the owner said in a Korean accent.
A sudden sense of relief came over me.
But what if she had spoken only Korean?
What if I couldn't communicate and they got frustrated?
What if I looked bad?
At that time, I realized how important it is to know the local language.
